       May 22: A young black bear with a sweet tooth ambled into Callanan Park late Saturday night, causing authorities to close the park to humans. The bear feasted on the remnants of cupcakes left in a park dumpster, then climbed up a tree. Wildlife agents tried to tranquilize the bruin with a dart, but the drug had no effect. David Robbins has been named the 2008 Washington State Tree Farmer of the Year in recognition of the exceptional commitment of his family to the enhancement of his forest land. The Robbins family runs the Hama Hama Tree Farm in Lilliwaup. According to information from the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, there were fewer methamphetamine labs, complaints, arrests and investigations of the illegal drug last year in Mason County when compared to the year before. Washington State Senator Tim Sheldon, who’s also a Mason County Commissioner, said

his family is seeking information from anyone who may have seen what happened May 9 when his mother, Lillian Sheldon, 92, was found lying in the Fred Meyer store parking lot in Lacey. She died Monday at Saint Peter Hospital where she had been a patient. A hip injury suffered in the parking lot incident was a factor in her death, Thurston County authorities said. Heather Byington, a fourth-grade teacher at Evergreen Elementary School, has been named Shelton School District’s nominee for the 2009 Washington State Teacher of the Year Program. Byington has taught at Evergreen the past five years. “I’m humbled every time I watch her teach,” Principal Steve Warner said. Residents of Fire District 2 in Belfair approved a property tax levy lid lift during Tuesday’s special election. Also, Fire District 12 voters in Matlock approvedan emergency medical services levy, while voters at Harstene

Pointe okayed formation of a water and sewer district and a levy. Three commissioners were elected for the new district. They included William Parisio, Mary Alice Clary and Roger Ray. Two Shelton High School athletes qualified for the state track meet. They were senior Ian Hastings in pole vault and ninth-grader Brenna Thompson in the 400.
