WEEK IN REVIEW
May 8: A proposed annexation of the Peacock Ridge area to the City of Shelton will be the subject of a public hearing on May 19. The area includes a 240-acre site east of Olympic College Shelton, owned by Green Diamond Resource Company, as well as 40 acres owned by Mell Mason County. The developer, Boston Harbor Land Company, is seeking a density of four residential units per acre. Research into the effect of geoduck farming on the environment, other creatures and the geoducks themselves has been funded through the Sea Grant program of the University of Washington. Wild geoducks are harvested from subtidal areas by scuba divers, but over the past decade geoduck aquaculture has augmented the harvest of wild geoducks. Plans for the Mason County Forest Festival will run from May 29 through June 1 and feature the annual Paul Bunyan Parade, a carnival,

poker run, fireworks show and more. Not everything is tranquil, though. The festival’s planning committee sent out more than 60 donation letters to businesses and entities asking for support. Only three responded. When the Dali Lama visited Seattle on April 14 for the first time in 15 years, a small group of students and faculty from Shelton High School and CHOICE Alternative School attended a program for young people at Key Arena to hear words of compassion from the spiritual leader. The students were nominated for the trip by faculty for qualities such as leadership and compassion. Cindy Brewer, animal control officer with the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, on Tuesday received the Medical Rescue Real Hero Award from the American Red Cross. She was one of about a dozen people recognized for saving lives and offering comfort and displaying courage in dangerous situations

in Mason, Thurston and Lewis counties. Dozens of people turned out last Saturday for a ceremony dedicating the Port of Allyn’s Water system. The new system greatly improves fire flow in the Allyn Urban Growth Area and allows for more commercial and residential hookups. Shelton High School’s baseball team first postseason playoff appearance in 20 years was sweet and brief. They lost to Highline 5-2. Six Highclimbers earned all-league baseball honors. They were Alex Olson, Alex Okonek, Jacob, Tyler and Jordan Dunnington and Dalton Emerson.
