WEEK IN REVIEW

March 27: Good knight, Lieutenant Governor Brad Owen, a Shelton resident and one-time Shelton city commissioner, is going to receive the highest honor the King of Spain can bestow on a non-citizen: Spanish knighthood. The ceremony will be at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, in the Senate chambers in the Capitol. Is it political wool power or are Shelton city commissioners getting sheepish? Either way, the prospect of the city hiring blackberry-munching goats will come up at next Monday’s meeting. The goats would be used to clear brush and blackberries at the site of the David Shelton Pear Orchard along State Route 3. Shelton city commissioners lined up solidly behind City Administrator Dave O’Leary on Monday, voicing their support for him despite pressure from five city employee bargaining groups who want him ousted. Commissioner Mike Byrne said he found “very little substance” in last week’s presentation by city staff members that would justify releasing O’Leary. On Wednesday, O’Leary unveiled a proposal to cut

five positions from the city payroll to keep the city budget’s ending fund balance whole during the next two years. A partnership led by the Squaxin Island Tribe will receive $625,000 in federal funds to clean things up on shore for improving the harvest of shellfish from the beds on Oakland Bay. Officials of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the grant Wednesday. Nine young people, members of the 4-H Forestry Leadership Team have been invited to New York by the Teens for Planet Earth, a program based in New York and organized by the Wildlife Conservation Society. The Allyn waterfront has a brand new addition. The 12,000 square-foot structure going up now is only the first in a series of three buildings planned for the site.
