THANKS TO HER trusty laptop computer, Shelton resident Susanne Nylander is graduating from college via the Internet.

THE BEAR GULCH II wildfire has consumed 750 acres at Lake Cushman but stayed within the burned area Tuesday. Nearby recreation is still halted.

PUTTING THE SQUEEZE on Leroy Sylvester is his wife, Amy, who walked the Survivors Lap at the Shelton Relay for Life in his name in each of the last three years. Mr. Sylvester, 69, recently got out of prison, where he earned his general educational development (GED) certificate.

THE FENCE ART project by 20 kids serves several purposes besides beautification. It also frames SOCK's raised-bed gardens and expresses the agency's mission.

FROM SIDELINE SHOWBOATING (top) to gobblingbubbles 'neath a welcome parasol (near), distractionscompete with the main business at hand last weekend as Shelton plays host to South Mason Youth Soccer's annual Kickoff Tournament. Boasting fully 85 teams from all over the peninsula and a schedule of no fewer than 154 games, the yearly affair officially launched the local kids' season. The hosts had a half dozen entries in the donnybrook, which pitted boys and girls from the U-11 age division through U-18. In all, 11 fields were used at three venues, including the junior-high facility shown here. Action in the three-day affair was also at Loop and Johns Prairie.

A FAMILY AFFAIR even still ten years after its inception the local sofftball community's annual Brad Brush Memorial Slowpitch Tournament plays out in character last weekend in Callanan Park. That's the late Brad's 2-year-old great, great neice, Madison Norton, looking on from her concession-stand perch, top. Horsing around between games, near, are players' kids (from left) Austin Faught, Isaac Willis and Alexis Willis. Offering one up and popping one up, respectively, in the middlemost insets are perennial all-star Elmer Herrel and recently graduated collegiate hoop star Liz (deWaalMalefyt) Canright. Inset left,outfielder Tracy Duchene makes a circus catch and hangs on despite taking a tumble, andher Fuddpucker teammate, the aforementioned Herrel, dutifully carries the mood over to the next pitch. And in pregame sequence on the right are the Fudds' Pat "Guerrera" Malone and teammates' Gabe and Jenny Sar-tori's 2-year-old son Jaron. NORTH MASON Education Association Vice President Johanna Roberts, center, addresses a crowd of about 100 people that showed up in front of the North Mason School District offices this week. The group was there to show support for superintendent Tom Kelly following rumors that his job was in jeopardy.
