Moon over the mountains

Carl Johnson used the eyepiece of his telescope to improve the vision of his camera just before the sun came up to catch this shot of the moon rising over the Olympic Mountains to take a peek at Hood Canal. The vantage point looking west from the deck of the Johnson home in Union Heights is about 430 feet above the water's edge.

Holy cannoli! That's a lot of food

Surrounded by the canned goods they collected as part of Mason County Christian School's food drive are members of Pam Greig's second-grade class. Conducted in observance of the school's 100th day of class, the tradition began three years ago, when they decided to collect 100 cans of food by day 100. Last year, they challenged other classes to contribute and this year the whole school stepped up, each grade from first through eighth bringing in more than 100 cans of food. All counted, the school donated 1,170 cans of food to the Saints' Pantry food bank. Pictured from the left in the back are Ireland Lancaster, Stephen Lindahl, Kaitlyn Allen, Abby McGuire, Hannah Reitsch, Jaymie Pentony, Samuel Gifford and Eugene Macero, and in the front are Dionna King, Brianna Kamin, Kandru Dimalanta, Blake Lundgren, Connor Hilburn and Christian Jewett.

LOOMING EVEN IN the cavernous Tacoma Dome, Climber wrestling's six-foot-four, 260-pound heavyweight Zach Corbett listens to coach Chris Lacy moments before his first-round match at state Friday. Alas, like teammate Jeremy Knowlton at 125 pounds, Zach wound up failing to advance to Saturday's medal round, though he did manage to win one match after coming within literally seconds of upsetting the eventual state champ. Story at left.
