Old logger dies at age 92

Allen Coleman, the one-time logger who built his own 1,800-square-foot log cabin in the Cloquallum area, died Sunday at age 92. He is shown in January 1984 with his wife Georgia, who survives him after 73 years of marriage. The house had a 40x17 living/dining room with a 19-foot ceiling, a huge stone fireplace, a spiral staircase to the loft and Cloquallum Creek running through the yard. The Colemans traveled all over Canada looking at examples of log homes before he undertook the four-year building process aided by his sons. He cut the notches in the log ends with a double-bitted ax. Mr. Coleman started working for Weyerhaeuser "as a kid" in 1928 and came to Shelton in 1946. He worked for Lumbermen's Mercantile for 12 years and then returned to the woods in 1958, doing all of his logging for Simpson. He liked to work with wood and made miniature axes and hatchets for the Mason County Forest Festival.

IN GHOSTLIKE ILLUMINATION under the Minidome spotlight, the Climber wrestlers exit the mat following prematch warmup last week.

TO THE AROUSAL of fans ever-vigilant and prepubescently distracted alike, six-three junior Derek Ranney patiently awaits the opposition's return to Earth before putting up a two-pointer in the paint during a recent Climber varsity game in the Minidome.

DIVER ZACK FENTON gets a poolside eyeful of his handiwork off the one-meter board last week, courtesy of digital-camera-wielding sophomore classmate Jenny Sanders aka swim-team veteran Billy's kid sister. Bending the board at the outset of one of his six dives in the inset is another Climber sophomore, Isaac Taito. Although Zack dove strictly exhibition during last Tuesday's dual meet, he and senior teammate Marcus Bohme came up with breakthrough performances in a zone diving meet this past weekend to earn matching berths in the upcoming district championships. Teammate Isaac wasn't able to attend the meet, but he's on the virge of qualifying as well and should do so this week, says Climber coach Rob Phelan, adding that the sophomore is both naturally athletic and readily coachable. "He's a great kid," he says.

PLUMAGE FLYING AND pecs greased, local Samoans join in the entertainment Friday afternoon at the junior high school as the Shelton Timberwolves assemble in early celebration of Martin Luther King Day. Glistening at the ready as they await their cue at the top are featured "warriors" (from left) Jordan Afo, Tim Russell, Racheem Jacobs and Larry Tinoisamoa. Their resplendent grass-skirted counterparts, near, include (from left) Taysha Taito, Letisha Echeverria, Amanda Sims, Candace Afo, Samantha Hernandez and Elizabeth Brundt. Earlier in the program, local Native Americans shared in similar fashion, and then the Timberwolf theater class presented a play about civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks.

THIS YEAR'S Polar Plunge at Allyn Waterfront Park, benefiting the local branch of the Boys and Girls Club, raised a record amount of money nearly $20,000 to help offset the costs of operating the teen center and sites at each of the elementary schools.
