Harbor lights
Shelton's Simpson waterfront greets predawn motorists recently on Highway 3.

ELSPETH POPE spends her days raising money for the Hypatia-in-the-Woods Foundation, which she hopes will one day open a retreat for woman artists. One of the fund-raisers is a workshop on letterpress printing.

AS AN ASSEMBLY at Pioneer School is about to begin, Kaylee Wright and Paul Bruemmer are thinking about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King.

APPEARANCES NOTWITHSTANDING and as this matside miss no doubt could attest even from the peanut gallery there's nothing the least bit ballroom-suitable about Zach Corbett on the wrestling mat. Here the Climbers' unbeaten senior, right, prepares to administer a second tattooing in a recent battle of heavyweights.

SAVING AN ERRANT one on the baseline during a recent varsity game in the Minidome is six-three junior Corey Golob, who tallied 10 and 12 points last week and had a game-high 17 the weekend before.

HOOP SHOOT CHAMPS from the area schools strike a pose with their Elks benefactors before their big showdown Sunday in the Minidome. Triumphant in the 8- and 9-year-old kids' age division were Megan West among the girls and Daniel Wiseman among the boys. They made eight and 12 free throws out of 25, respectively. Abbey Marshall and Jerry Landream made 9-25 and 13-25 to claim the 10- and 11-year-olds' titles, and Mackenzie Chakos and Tanner Anderson made an unspecified total and 13-25, respectively, to top the 12- and 13-year-olds. Those ascendant six will shoot it out among other county champions a week from Saturday in the district showdown in Hoquiam.

GRABBING A LUNGFUL on a flip turn during a Climber dual meet last week is junior veteran Jimmy Riley.

VanBuskirk takes on new look

Hawkins Middle School Dean Andrea Kozack checks out North Mason school board member Ken VanBuskirk's new hair style, or lack thereof. VanBuskirk volunteered for the shaving, which included his beard, as part of his effort to increase voter participation. Each student in the district was sent home with information about the upcoming replacement levy and asked to get a parent or guardian's signature. The kids at Hawkins got the most signatures, so VanBuskirk went there to make good on his promise to lose his do. Seen over Kozack's shoulder is North Mason School District Superintendent Tom Kelly.
