SHELTON ARTIST Dick Carlson displays two of his works, wooden lidded vessels that were inspired by the design of Native American baskets. FORMER SHELTON RESIDENT Andy Pack died a hero in Mexico on the afternoon of July 22. The 28-year-old Portland, Oregon, resident was vacationing with a couple of his friends in Ensenada, Mexico, when four children, ages 8 and younger, got caught in a whirlpool or rip tide in the Pacific Ocean, his father, Gene Pack of Shelton, said. While one of his friends went in the surf to save one child, Andy Pack went in and pulled two others out. The current was so strong, it took everything the friend could muster to get out. Pack returned and got the fourth youngster close enough to shore to be saved, but did not have enough strength left to save himself and drowned.

TWO ORCAS FROLIC in Hood Canal near Hoodsport. These and other killer whales, which stayed in the canal for an extraordinary amount of time this year, have apparently headed for the Pacific Ocean. This beautiful close-up photo was taken by Josh London, a PhD candidate in the University of Washington School of Aquatic and Fishery Science. The average citizen might not know it is illegal to get closer than 100 meters from an orca because of anti-harassment laws. It takes a permit to be closer. This photo was taken under the authority of Scientific Research Permit No. 782-1719, issued by the National Marine Fisheries Service under the authority of the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act.

MODERATOR MIKE Greene of Belfair addresses a group of about 80 people during a town meeting at the Mary E. Theler Community Center in Belfair in which the North Mason Community Voice citizens group elected a set of directors for the newly formed organization. The group's next meeting is set for August 15 at the center.
