A SURVEYOR FROM THE Washington State Department of Transportation scopes out the lay of the land where State Route 106 passes over Skobob Creek. The road is closed to through traffic as work begins to replace an old culvert with a new bridge. The closure takes on added significance with upcoming short-term closures of the Hood Canal Bridge between Jefferson and Kitsap counties.

AMERICORPS VOLUNTEER Ashley Bowen is supervising a community garden program at the Mason County Fairgrounds, which donates fresh produce to charity.

A LOG TRUCK makes a hard right-hand turn off Railroad Avenue onto Seventh Street on Tuesday afternoon. In the past four years there have been three accidents at the intersection involving log trucks, including two in which trucks making the turn spilled their loads of logs, but caused no injuries. The safety issue has been a subject of Shelton City Commission discussion.

Bowling for Martha

Bruce Munro, Martha Reed's bowling partner of five years, aims for a strike at the Timber Bowl on Saturday. Friends of the nurse and county coroner gathered there to raise money to help Reed through her recovery from leukemia. By the end of the day, a few dozen people had shown up to play, donate funds or write a note to Reed.


ALMOST ALL EYES are on the incoming fastball last week during American Legion baseball action in Olympia. Delivering one from the mound in the inset is Shelton's Alex Olson, who wound up getting the win. And otherwise occupied in the cheap seats behind the plate at left is fellow Highclimber Breana Chavez. Olson will be a sophomore at Shelton High School this fall, Chavez a junior.
