JOHN JOHNSON enjoys scenery and a respite during his recent 117-day march along the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, which led the Shelton-area man from the California-Mexico border to Canada.

HOOD CANAL PRINCIPAL Bert Miller is the new president of the Hood Canal Kiwanis Club. They sponsor the Buildings Club for youngsters at the school.

Making a statement about AIDS

Ben Johnson, coordinator of Mason County's efforts to prevent Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome and to help people suffering from AIDS, reads a proclamation at the start of the AIDS Walk on September 25. About 50 people made the trek around Mountain View in Shelton and raised $2,662 through a raffle and direct donations. Signed September 2 by the Mason County Commissioners, the proclamation notes that about one million people in the United States and 10,000 in the state of Washington suffer from AIDS and that the national spreading of the disease "necessitates a national effort to increase communication, education and preventative action."


Looking for trouble

Volunteer kayakers took to Oakland Bay last week in an effort to find drainage pipes that might be adding pollution to the bay.


Mason missies really clean up

Young ladies who have entered the first-ever Miss Mason County Scholarship Program competition washed cars and sold baked goods at Heritage Bank in Shelton Saturday, September 25. Organizer Tami Engstrom said they raised $250 towards scholarships that will be awarded when Miss Mason is selected in November.
