WSU MASON COUNTY EXTENSION

Washington State University Mason County Extension is a partnership of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, WSU and Mason County that delivers information and educational programs focusing on 10 areas:

Food safety: Helping people improve food safety from farm to table including food preservation. Extension provides food worker card training for more than 1,500 people annually.

Nutrition education: Programs for low-income children and adults on healthy food choices, food safety and stretching food budgets, including reaching more than 1,500 students annually in grade 1-7 classrooms.

4-H and youth development: Reaching more than 2,000 youngsters annually through 4-H and other youth development programs, building leadership and life skills in 43 4-H clubs, school-based activities, after-school programs and summer day camps.

Water resources: Workshops, presentations and technical assistance to improve the quality of fresh and marine water – from pasture management and landscaping practices to care of septic systems and drinking water.

Forest stewardship: Providing after-school and summer internship forestry programs for youth and forest stewardship courses for adults.

Strengthening families: Families and youngsters engage in interactive problem-solving activities, learn to communicate in healthy ways and develop skills to mentor youth.

Leadership development: Courses on grant writing, effective communication and other topics to enable individuals to be more effective in their community, organization and family.

Small farms: Technical assistance, educational opportunities, economic opportunities and a direct link to state and federal resources available to family farmers. The program produces the Mason County Farm Map that links people directly with local family farms.

Noxious weed control: Educates residents on how and why specific weeds need to be controlled and makes equipment and technical assistance available to foster effective control of noxious weeds.

Horticulture: Trained Master Gardeners answer questions and educate residents about sound gardening, landscaping practices and responsible pest and disease control.
