Local art, culture and festive fun
THE SHELTON Fiddle Fest has brought some tremendous and young talent to town in its 22 years, including Dan Wilson of Spokane and Colleen Birdsong of Pacific, who entertained in 1997. The musical menu here includes a classical music festival, a bluegrass weekend, summer Music in the Park and a five-performance community concert series.

MUSEUMS

Home of Sacred Belongings, Squaxin Island Indian Tribe Museum Library and Research Center, next to tribal center off Old Olympic Highway in Kamilche, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Mason County Historical Society Museum, Fifth and Railroad, Shelton, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Mason County Logging and Farming Museum, county fairgrounds, open during major special events at fairgrounds and by appointment (call 426-1020).

Matlock Historical Museum, Mary M. Knight School campus on Matlock-Brady Road, call Jill Hall at 482-3382 for appointment.

PUBLIC ART

More than a dozen artworks grace the streets and buildings of downtown Shelton. A detailed description (by artist) appears in The Journal's Visitor's Guide to Mason County . There is also indoor and outdoor art at Mason General Hospital and Olympic College Shelton.

School concerts: Mason County schools regularly schedule performances by their bands and choirs.

The county fair and OysterFest offer nonstop music on multiple stages. Other festivals feature music, too. Also look for special concerts of classical and religious music at the county's churches.

THEATRE

Harstine Island Theatre Club shows in island's community hall: a vaudeville show in July at a date to be announced and the free Christmas show in December.

School theatre: Schools offer a number of plays and musicals on stage. Local schools boosters also bring the Missoula Children's Theatre to the county to involve scores of youngsters in the acting. Shelton Junior Programs brings performances to town to entertain elementary kids.

VISUAL ARTS

The Peninsula Art Association sponsors two major shows each spring, one for high-school artists and the other an open competition, at the Reed Library in Shelton.

Art lovers can also view works at the Mason County Fair in July and OysterFest in October and at the displays at the Squaxin Tribe's museum and the Skokomish Tribal Center.
