SHELTON-MASON COUNTY SPORTS HALL OF FAME

The hall of fame was founded to honor men and women from this area who have made significant contributions in any area of sports.

Inductees include:

Garth Getty (1941-1994), hall founder, Irene S. Reed High School, 1956-1959, baseball and softball.

Bill Dickie (1911-1972), sports journalist, Shelton-Mason County Journal .

Jess Phillips (1923-1988), Shelton High School Class of 1943, baseball, softball player and sponsor.

Wes Stock, (1934- ), pitcher, Irene S. Reed High School, 1950-1952, Washington State College, 1953-1955, 27-13 in major leagues, 1959-1967.

Lawson "Woody" Sanderson (1893-1979), Irene S. Reed High School Class of 1914, softball, baseball, track, three sports at University of Montana, 1918 Rose Bowl with Mare Island, California.

"Rusty" Callow (1890-1961), crew coach, University of Washington 1922-1927, Penn 1928-1942, U.S. Naval Academy 1950-1959, 1952 Olympics gold medal crew.

Bill Brickert (1922- ), track and football coach, Shelton High School, Shelton Junior High School, Washington State Track Coaches Hall of Fame.

Bob Miller (1948- ), 1966 Shelton High School graduate (standout in football, basketball and track), fastpitch, softball, two-time American Softball Association All-American, 1983 Pan Am Games silver medalist.

Cathy Cole (1961- ), basketball, fastpitch, track and field, 1979 SHS graduate (12 varsity letters), all-league in basketball and softball at Colorado Women's College, also played at Saint Martin's College, U.S. Slowpitch Softball Association All-World team twice, four USSSA World Series.

Des Koch (1932-1991), football, track and field, Irene S. Reed High School 1948-1950, University of Southern California, 1951-1954, bronze medalist in discus, 1956 Olympic Games.

Bill Nutt (1937-1981), fastpitch, softball, pitched Shelton fastpitch team to state title in 1974 with no earned runs in 32 innings at state and no-hitter in title game.

Roland "Sonny" Lowe (1925- ), fastpitch, 16-time Bayshore club champion in golf, bowling.

Terry Gregg (1943- ), Shelton High School head basketball coach, 1970-1986, state champions in 1976, state runners-up in 1977.

Wayne Clary (1931- ), Shelton High School 1947-1949, baseball, fastpitch, bowling, in minor league baseball was MVP of 1951 Redding Browns, went to New York Giants 1950 spring training.

Jack Stewart (1919-2004), Irene S. Reed Class of 1937, baseball, fast-pitch (player, coach, umpire), golf, tennis, bowling.

Jack Stark (1935- ), Shelton High School head football coach for 25 years, 1969-1984, state champions in 1974 and 1985, Washington State Football Coaches Hall of Fame.

Shannon Beeler (1977- ), 1995 SHS graduate, all-league in softball, volleyball and basketball at SHS, fastpitch All-American at University of Minnesota, member of U.S. Junior Olympics softball team, attended U.S. Olympic trials, started in Women's Professional Fastpitch League.

Terry Dion (1957- ), star halfback and defensive end on SHS's 1974 state championship team, three-sport letterwinner, second team all-Pacific 10 defensive end at University of Oregon, fourth-round draft selection by Seattle Seahawks, National Semi-Pro Coach of Year in 1984.

Doug Long (1955- ), 1973 SHS grad, three-sport letterman, Little All-American at end at Whitworth College, played briefly for Seattle Seahawks as defensive back, inducted into Whitworth's Heritage Gallery Hall of Fame in 1995.

Dave Austin (1938-2006), 1956 Irene S. Reed grad, nine letters in three sports, led football team to first unbeaten season in 1955, all-state quarterback, co-captained University of Washington freshman football team, varsity backup as sophomore.

Don Brown (1938- ), SHS mound ace (four no-hitters in career from '54 to '56) and .421 hitter and all-state as senior, longtime Little League coach, fastpitch player and top bowler in town at one point.

Mike Johnson (1948-2002), 1966 SHS grad, state record in pole vault at 14'5" in 1965 and state pole vault champion, second all-time at SHS in long jump, 9.9-yards-per-carry average as halfback in '64 and '65, all league in football in '64 (league scoring title on only 28 carries).

Headquarters: 790 East Johns Prairie Road, Shelton. Regular routes: Route 1: Shelton to Belfair via Highway 3. Route 2: Shelton to Belfair via Highway 106 and Union. Route 3: Belfair to Bremerton and state ferries. Route 4: Belfair vicinity. Route 5: Shelton South Loop. Route 6: Shelton to Olympia and return. Route 7: Shelton North Loop. Route 8: Shelton to Brinnon. Route 50 and 51: Shelton to Hoodsport and Shelton to Kamilche. Puget Sound Naval Shipyard commuter program (four coaches daily). Dial-a-ride service also offered (427-5033 in Shelton calling area or 1-800-374-3747 toll-free). Fares: All in-county service is free. Regional service to out-of-county destinations (Olympia, Bremerton and Brinnon) costs $1 each way, 50 cents for seniors and disabled persons; fare boxes are on board. Children 5 and under ride free. For those traveling out of county on a regular basis, monthly passes are sold at reduced rates: $22 for adults, $9 for seniors and disabled, $14 for youth (ages 6-17). Summer Youth Adventure Pass (for ridership throughout the Olympic Peninsula from Memorial Day to Labor Day), $10. Passes can be bought at Mason Transit business office, Shelton Civic Center, QFC store in Belfair, Olympia Transit Center and Bremerton Ferry Terminal. Ridership: 2006, 367,600; 2005, 365,544; 2004, 314,234; 2003, 290,804; 2002, 272,495. Two most heavily used routes in 2006: Shelton South Loop, 74,796; Shelton to Olympia, 50,634. Miles transit vehicles traveled in 2006: 983,736 (944,544 in 2005, 974,100 in 2004). Buses in fleet: 63 (21 coaches seating 22-45; 17 smaller buses seating 14-29; 25 vans in commuter programs seating 12). Employees: 41 full time, 36 part time. Drivers employed: 39. Volunteer program: Drivers using their own cars and reimbursed for gas took people to medical services not available locally, putting in 3,346 hours and 92,550 miles in 2,069 trips in 2006. Total budget for 2007: $5,009,000 ($8,609,000 in 2006). Operating budget for 2007: $3,105,580 ($4,286,112 in 2006, $3,561,150 in 2005 and $2,672,470 in 2004). Sources of revenue: Retail sales and use tax, $3,406,272; out-of-county fares, $52,302; grants and formula funds, $1,685,421; investment interest, $169,956; vanpool and PSNS commuter program , $318,301; special-event revenue, $6,581; maintenance-shop revenue, $11,123; facility rental income, $5,500; donations, $4,011; surplus vehicle sales, $16,350; refunds and reimbursements, $36,203. (The major source of funding for the transit system is a sales tax of 0.6 percent.) Average cost per ride to transit system in 2006: $8.45 ($9.19 2005).
