What the county brings to the table
THE SHELTON School District, with 4,260 students on seven campuses, has more than half of the county's 8,185 kids in public schools. At $37 million, its budget is more than twice the size of the next largest district, North Mason. The county's seven school districts are spending almost $73 million educating children during the 2006-2007 year.

In Mason County, 52.7 percent of traffic deaths for the 13-year period 1993-2005 involved drunk or drug-impaired driving. The statewide rate was 40.4 percent. Washington State Traffic Safety Commission statistics show that during the period 1993-2005, Mason County had 78 impaired-driver-involved traffic deaths. Of the state’s 8,393 traffic deaths during the 13-year period, 3,388 involved impaired drivers.

Washington State Traffic Safety Commission statistics show that during the period 1993-2003 Mason County had the seventh-highest 11-year traffic-death rate amongst the 39 counties. Mason County, with 4,478,635,000 vehicle-miles traveled, suffered 122 traffic deaths, for a rate of 2.72 deaths per 100 million vehicle-miles traveled. Higher rates were found in San Juan (4.01), Ferry (3.10), Stevens (2.84), Klickitat (2.83), Okanogan (2.80) and Skamania (2.77), similarly rural counties. The lowest rate (0.75) was in the most populous county, King. Drivers in the second-lowest county, Cowlitz (0.93), drove 8 billion more miles than those in Mason County but had four fewer deaths in 11 years. The state average was 2.10.
