Washington State Traffic Safety Commission statistics show that during the period 1993-2003 Mason County had the seventh-highest 11-year traffic-death rate amongst the 39 counties. Mason County, with 4,478,635,000 vehicle-miles
traveled, suffered 122 traffic deaths, for a rate of 2.72 deaths per 100 million vehicle-miles traveled. Higher rates were found in San Juan (4.01), Ferry (3.10), Stevens (2.84), Klickitat (2.83), Okanogan (2.80) and Skamania
(2.77), similarly rural counties. The lowest rate (0.75) was in the most populous county, King. Drivers in the second-lowest county, Cowlitz (0.93), drove 8 billion more miles than those in Mason County but had four fewer
deaths in 11 years. The state average was 2.10. |
